Introducing our Back to Bacall Botanical Fragrance
Exclusively by in-house perfumer Sharon Louise Chapman.
Our latest botanical fragrance, Back to Bacall, is perhaps our most unusual fragrance to date. If you love amber-type scents, you’ll probably appreciate this twist on one of the perfume classics!
Back to Bacall is an ode to Lauren Bacall (1924-2014) who was actually born Betty Joan Perske. Her movie star roles portrayed strong and sensual women. In real life, she was a self-assured, determined, independent lady. I have merged together several of these characteristics in this very unique fragrance.
Back to Bacall builds on the classic amber accord. Surprisingly, it is the amber accord that hits you first, followed by a peek of grapefruit. The middle floral note in this fragrance is almost non-existent as the fragrance merges from citrus-amber, drawing out to lengthy, dominant smoky vibe. Finally, you’ll get an injection of coffee, combined with the long-lived smokiness which overall transposes the sweet amber notes.
If you love sweet amber perfumes combined with deep smokiness, you’ll love Back to Bacall. It’s strong, sensual, and self-assured – just like the fragrance’s namesake herself!
The Inspiration Behind the Fragrance
“There are a lot of people who don’t like me at all, I’m very sure of that. But I wasn’t put on earth to be liked. I have my own reasons for being and my own sense of what is important and what isn’t, and I’m not going to change that.” Lauren Bacall
Lauren Bacall (1924-2014) was an American actress who caught the eye of Humphrey Bogart (1899-1957) in her first major Hollywood role To Have and Have Not (1944). The couple fell in love and were married shortly afterwards. Bacall was a strong and self-assured woman and did not conform to the position of people-pleaser. Her role as a leading lady in movies emulated strong and sensual women; she was also known for her deep, smoky voice which projected a certain sexy confidence.
I wanted to capture both Bacall’s personality and the traits of some of her movie star roles in my fragrance creation. As with both Avid about Ava and Regretta, Back to Bacall was a creative challenge. The key difference in creating this fragrance to the others in this fragrance collection was the length of time that I let it to age rather than making many reiterations. And, as is often the case, this was partly a happy accident!
Back to Bacall is an autumn into winter fragrance for colder days and nights. It is a deep smoky fragrance with sweet amber notes running throughout it. A twist on a classic amber scent inspired by one of the greatest classics of Hollywood.
Strong. Sensual. Self-assured.
