Insomnia is a common problem amongst many people, particularly with women. Most people will experience insomnia at some point in their life and will either have difficulty getting to sleep or staying asleep for any length of time. Although the cause of insomnia varies, there are a few simple aromatherapy recipes that might help in your search for a more restful night’s sleep. Here are a couple of my own tried and tested aromatherapy recipes (both on myself and with clients).

Aromatherapy Blend #1 for Insomnia

You will need:

  •  2 oz empty bottle with spritzer fitting
  • 2 oz distilled water
  • 15 drops of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
  • 10 drops of Roman chamomile (Chamaemelum nobile) essential oil.

Mix all of your ingredients together in the bottle and spray a little on your pillow before you go to sleep at night!

Aromatherapy Blend #2 for Insomnia

You will need:

  • 2 oz empty bottle with spritzer fitting
  • 2 oz distilled water
  • 15 drops of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil
  • 8 drops of benzoin (Styrax benzoin) resinoid.

Mix all of your ingredients together in the bottle and spray a little on your pillow before you got to sleep at night! Note, benzoin is a sticky, thick resinoid, so be careful it doesn’t clog up your spritzer fitting.

Aromatherapy Blend #3 for Insomnia

You will need:

  • an aromatherapy diffuser
  • 5 ml empty bottle with dropper fitting
  • 40 drops of sweet marjoram (Origanum marjorana) essential oil
  • 60 drops of lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) essential oil.

Mix the sweet marjoram and lavender essential oils together in the empty 5 ml bottle. Add a few drops of this blend to an aromatherapy diffuser and burn for about 15 minutes before going to sleep.

Warning – do not leave the diffuser on/burning when you have gone to sleep. Do not use this aromatherapy blend directly on your skin or in any other way than that recommended above.

Tips for Using Aromatherapy for Insomnia

Even if you do find a certain degree of success with these aromatherapy recipes, I would recommend that you alter the aromatherapy recipe slightly every few weeks – or take a break from the recipe. Your body will probably get used to the scent and will not necessarily respond to it in the same way as it originally did. Its easy to switch out one essential oil for another (or vary the quantities) because there are several essential oils that can be used for insomnia.
